On the evening of May 22nd, 2011, Joplin, Missouri was hit by an EF-5 tornado. The tornado ripped through one third of the city taking thousands of homes and businesses with it. The death toll reached 161 and more than 400 people were injured. It was reported to be the deadliest single tornado since 1947, and the ninth deadliest tornado of all time. Damages were reported in excess of 3 billion dollars. The resolve and determination of the Joplin residents to rebuild has been astounding.
